How to make such sounds with Linux?

I play in a Metal band and I'd like to make some electro samples for our songs to make them fuller sounding etc. I have an example: http://4799.NYC2.soundclick.com/jarry_D … groove.mp3 Such sounds which he used in the beginning, that's the kind of thing I want to make. Which programs are good for something like that?

"In the beginning" - do you mean between 10 and 20 seconds?
Those high-pitched electro-sounding tones can be made in a variety of ways, you can give lmms a shot - it's a fairly complete tool for creating music and has a nice tutorial http://lmms.sourceforge.net/wiki/index. … _with_LMMS

The quality of the sound depends on the samples / presents. You need to try and hear it for yourself to judge if it's good enough for you.

Yepp, but especially the last part just before the guitar blasts in. I already found a pretty cool virtual guitar amp on Linux, gx_head really allows you to get incredible tone. But I have a tube amp, so that won't be used execpt for my own demos wink

My sample production won't make it to a CD or live set, our producer is very good with such things. I'd simply like to be able to make my own demos of sample ideas I have. I'll give lmms a shot, heared a lot about it, but never actually cared, because those sounds didn't interest me in the past.

Thanks for the hint karol!

But of course, if there are synthesizers or something out there which might even produce cooler tones, I'd be happy to know smile

Lmms has samples, presents, let's you modify the synthesized soundbites, use external synths like ZynAddSubFX etc.
Unfortunately I can't tell you which sample has that exact sound, but it's all about getting the right instrument, pitch, envelope etc. so I'm sure you'll get what you want.

I don't know what a "cool tone" is, but we d have some nice synths, so give them a shot:

Re: How to make such sounds with Linux?

Sound collages like that are typical of any modern all purpose synthesizers and are mainly generated by dynamic modular filters. If you look through the pro-audio stuff that Arch users have already set up, I'll bet that you'll find one that's intuitive to you.

I will highly recommend that you put together something that sounds natural against the instruments that you and/or your band uses. Nearly all usage of synthesized sounds in bands since the digital synth was introduced has created a disconnection from 'melding of sound'. Other than just being borish, crappy synth patches will put a huge time stamp your music.

It's done by a guy named Misha "Bulb" Mansoor, he's guitarist and songwriter of the amazing band Periphery, you should definitely check out "their self titled debut long play record" (you'll understand why I put that in "" as soon as you listened to it wink )

I'll second the periphery recommendation.  Killer band.  Hadn't heard this track (didn't know the guitarist was doing solo stuff too), but if you like it you'll like their stuff.
