There was also a message when I ran startx about an API conflict.. (I think) it was something like the module was built for 260.19.29 but can only find 260.19.21. (perhaps I am reversed here?)  I will install the drivers again and get an exact message to post.

Does anyone know how I can get the .29 drivers working?

after upgrading the modules, just reboot or do rmmod nvidia && modprobe nvidia

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

So, I have tried rmmod nvidia && modprobe nvidia as wonder suggested, however I am still getting the same API mismatch message.

Re: [SOLVED] Upgraded to nVidia 260.19.29 drivers, now X will not start

DOH!!.. The problem was that I was loading the nvidia module in my init, so I ran mkinitcpio after reinstalling the newer drivers and it now works! Thanks for trying smile. Coincidentally, I also removed the nvidia module from my mkinitcpio.conf  to avoid problems on future upgrades.
