Xfce 4.8pre3 in testing

I've put the basic set of packages for Xfce 4.8pre3 into testing. Goodies and panel plugins will follow soon. This is expected to be the final prerelase and somewhat our "release candidate".

- Make sure to remove -git and -devel packages if you have used such stuff. Update from official packages should be smooth. If not please report it.
- Make sure you backup you local settings in ~/.config/*
- the desktop might fail to update all settings properly - then test a clean profile
- take care about left over files in ~/.cache/... when you run into session issues
- please report here or to our bug tracker stuff that already worked with the -devel user repo by mygicrhesus (thanks again!)
- generally watch out for upstream reports before you report something to our tracker. upstream should know when you find something broken in the source code. our tracker is intended to track packaging bugs.

Have fun with Xfce4.8 coming along!

Hi, Thunar needs  libxfce4ui as a dependency. (It won't launch without it)

Also tumbler depends on ffmpegthumbnailer which is in community.

Re: Xfce 4.8pre3 in testing

Libxfce4ui does not depends on glade only a build dep for the module.
Xfce4-settings does not depend on gtk-engines, gtk-xfce-engine and tango (other themes might provide the icons too)
Xfce4-session depends on libxfce4ui.
Xfdesktop depends on garcon
Xfce-utils depends on xorg-xinit.
Thunar; maybe suggest volman and tumbler.
Xfburn: thunar-vfs not thunar.

xfce-utils and xfburn are fixed.
thunar already has tumbler in optdepends, maybe I'll also add volman.

I will apply more fixes tomorrow. Thanks to have you here checking our packages.

Re: Xfce 4.8pre3 in testing

Just installed 4.8pre3.
Some things i noticed. Nothing in the xfce4 group depends on upower and udisks.
Lack of upower means the user cant shutdown/reboot the machine from the menu.
Lack of udisks, even though thunar-volman is installed, means you cant automount devices.
As far as i can see the only xfce package depending on both is xfce4-power-manager.

edit: I dont know if im doing anything wrong, but i cant seem to be able to shutdown even with those two present, probably something i forgot to do, i will investigate this later.

Another thing is that consolekit in needed only by thunar-vfs which to my knowledge is mostly deprecated and even though being in the xfce4 group (which maybe it shouldnt) is only needed by xfburn. And that through HAL.

Re: Xfce 4.8pre3 in testing

Installed the latest xfce4 in testing and so far I cannot get the Display Settings to work. It just complains about something not enabled (can't remember the actual verbiage) and gives me an option to cancel or run nVidia Control Panel.

I have the latest everything from the regular repos, and xfce4 and xorg stuff from [testing]. I have an nVidia 9800 GT video card. I haven't used Xfce in a long time, so I don't know if this is a pre-existing condition or not.

I am still searching the net for info.

Re: Xfce 4.8pre3 in testing

OK, I removed the [testing] version (4.8) and installed the "regular" version (4.6) and the Display Settings work fine. So something is broken somewhere. I'll keep digging.

technically you are right for sure but I think it's a distributions task to make it work out of the box with some working icon presettings and theme options. User will have to install some theme or icons anyway. And we had bug reports about missing icons and themes in the past. So I think it's not wrong to keep these dependencies to make sure the initial settings are working well.

For testing I had shipped two permission handling proto files in xfce4-session to manage upower and udisc permissions.

I'm not sure where to put the dependency on udisc - thunar or thunar-volman?

Should xfce4-session depend on upower and ship that proto file to workaround the changes in testing consolekit (we still have pam to fix to work with it)?

Nothing is broken; but the randr support has been upgrade and there was decided to drop 'legacy' randr support and look for the tools suitable for your driver if no decent randr version is supported by the video driver (in your case the nvidia-settings utility).

Volman is only a tool to automate mounting for different device types, on its own it contains no code to handle the mounting. The same for thunar. In fact the whole mounting part is handled by gio, so glib is the place to fix permissions. Now you might notice it work in nautilus, well gdm properly handles this, but since a bunch of people login from startxfce4, there is no proper way to handle the consolekit session (open for suggestions tho).

For the work-around I'd say the thunar package.

Yeah its fine to add upower+consolekit to the xfce4-session deps an ship the file in that package.

Re: Xfce 4.8pre3 in testing

Upgraded.   Had to set "lock panel" to get rid of annoying drag bars at the end of it and adjust the menu, but other than that I can not tell I am using a new version...  so all appears good!

Which menu setting was not properly migrated?

Re: Xfce 4.8pre3 in testing

Things like the "About XFCE" item were no longer hidden.   But that is because the .desktop files changed name and my ones in ~/.local/share/applications obviously no longer overrode them.

Ah yeah, those files were moved to another package and renamed (to avoid update conflicts and matching the binary name). Glad it's not an issue in the panel migration code ;-).

"Trash" is still missing from Thunar. (I saw this with thunar-git months ago.)

You need gvfs for that too. Would be nice if the optdept line would notice this: "gvfs: for trash support, mounting with udisk and remote filesystems"

Hmm, gvfs provides so "many" for Thunar that I think it ought to be a dep, not an optdep tongue

Maybe, but you can still use it without gvfs for basic file tasks, maybe some people prefer this too, but I agree, if you really want to use Thunar gvfs is required.

Re: Xfce 4.8pre3 in testing

To keep Arch KISS we should only add real dependencies and leave it up to the user to add more functionality.

I've changed the gvfs description as suggested in trunk for the next build.

I saw you also added udisk (gvfs uses it through gdu) yesterday, its not used by thunar, so better to drop that. The pkla file is in the right place tho, until consolekit is fixed.

Re: Xfce 4.8pre3 in testing

I can't get usb device mounting working in Thunar. I have disks, thunar-volman, and gvfs. (but not the full xfce install). I told thunar to automount usb stuff in
preferences->advanced->"enable volume management" and also
preferences->advanced->"configure volume management"
