I have a cannon SD1000 and I've been using gthumb to import photo from it. But recently this is broken. When I select Import in gthumb, the only option is from my USB disk. What happened?

Have you tried a different camera? Have you tried formatting the SD card? Resetting the camera to manufacturer defaults? A different cable?

I have the same problem here, but with different camera.
I solved my problem by downgrading gthumb to version 2.10.12-1 (lucky I had it in cache)

same here with CanonPowerShot S3.
i've asked about it: //bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=107654 issue not solved.
Meanwhile spend a lot of time to search internet for ghtumb ptp camera problems.
Tried:
gthumb -> Edit -> Extensions make shure "import photos' is anabled.
gthumb -> File -> import_from -> removable_device does not alow me to specify ANY camera.
gphoto2 --auto-detect gives me exactly the right camera.
gphoto2 --get-all-files copys all photos to my system ( works very good, i use this until problem fixed )
I suspect there is something broken but i do not understand how all
these components work together: udev, dbus, gvfs, gvfs-gphoto2, gthumb.
Could someone help a way of troubleshooting this issue ?
By the way: Just installed gtkam.
Makes it possible to select the photos that i need
and download them where i want.
