I just wanted to say HI.
My name is Matthew and I'm 13 years old I'll be 14 on May 1st!
I've tried a bunch of other distros but I really like arch.
I've been in the irc room for a few days and finally decide to sign up on the forums

Hi there, welcome to Arch. I hope you're enjoying your experience here thus far, and will long into the future. However, the type of post you have made, though nice and sweet, is as utterly pointless as the "I'm leaving" threads. We gain new users all the time, every day, and we lose then every day. No one around here really cares that you're here or you're not here, so keep it to yourself and don't pollute our beloved off-topic.

Welcome to Arch.
Don't mind the oldertimers, some of them no longer remember what's to be young. I think you are one of the youngest on this forum, getting 14 in May.

Be free to ask question and if any new ideas bring them forward.

Oh and err...welcome to arch..really, it was just the one post that bugged me, please do contribute and continue to post, Arch is very community-based.

I would also like to welcome you to the Arch community. Glad to see that you made a good choice for an OS at such a young age. I wish I started out in Linux when I was 14... oh wait I did (slackware, gotta love those floppies).

I came into contact with linux when I was 16, through a classmate - and I was like "why should I boot a semi-functional desktop when I have windows?".

Today, 3 years later, I'm more like "why should I boot a semi-functional operating system when I have Linux?"

I first tried Linux (SuSE 6.2) when I was 15 and I had no decent internet connection. My hardware was a Cyrix MediaGXm 266 (!!!). Needless to say I couldn't get X to work so I was traumatised. :'( It's taken me 5 more years to finally make the jump (i.e. a single boot Linux system) but it was worth it! When I look back, I wish we had broadband when I was 15.

I tried debian as my first distro and was very dissapointed, because as a noob I had to recompile the kernel, because allmost no drivers were included, or at least I thought so.
Also its only-free-software-policy was a bit annoying.

you caught me, i check the forums from my wife's computer from time to time. it does dual boot arch, but it has not recieved full time arch approval. funny enough, it's googles picasa that is the deal breaker for her. :-)

Picasa(2) is great - I've been looking for something similar in *nix, but haven't found anything usable yet...

i think miguel de icaza was working on some type of photo album in mono. at the moment i can't find it. it was about 3 or 4 months ago last time i saw it, wdemoss pointed it out to me. at the time it was primitive, but promising, i'll have to find it again.

Holy cow. All you guys talking about discovering Linux when you were 13 or 16 are REALLY making me feel old.

When I was 13 I was using an Atari 2600 to play awesome video games on my black and white TV. But when I was 16 I got to graduate to a glorious Commodore 64 and program in Basic. I was leet, so I could save to 170 kb floppies instead of the cassette tapes the masses had to use. :-)

2600? Me and my 5 siblings broke the paddles on the original Pong game. All this 'Mortal Kombat' fancy smancy shiznitt doesn't leave much to the imagination. Hell, I had to take my pants to the cleaners more often from my cursor being chased by blocky 'dragons' in Atari Adventure than I ever did with Doom3.
