How do I set the wallpaper in LXDE if I want to use desktop icons? I used to be able to do it from pcmanfm under edit->preferences->desktop but that is gone now. So, how do i change the background? I'm using compiz, not openbox by the way.

I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.

Try pcmanfm --desktop-pref

If all else fails, you can try feh or nitrogen - they're lightweight image viewers that can set the background. I use feh myself.
The syntax for doing it is:
feh --bg-scale /path/to/image
There's also a command to restore it on login, but I can't remember it right now - I'm sure some googling or reading the manpage will turn it up, though.

if you use feh/nitrogen it set the background for X and not for the lxde background ( I just experienced this as I completed the lxde set up in one my laptop). use pcmanfm -w <wallpaper> to set the lxde background. also you need to change wallpaper_mode=1 in ~/.config/pcmanfm/lxde/pcmanfm.conf.
Hope this helps.

Thanks anonymous_user. that worked. I would have tried feh, but i think you cant use desktop icons with it.
