I have installed Arch on my PC in VMware Player. It went through the first stage install OK, but I can't install any packages using pacman. If I run pacman -Syy I get "Network is unreachable"

Did you setup your network?
Try to ping a website.

Network seems ok (it is resolving names) but I am not getting reply to pings. But this happens in my host OS (Windows XP) anyway, and Internet works fine.

Are you wired or wireless?
If wireless, try connecting directly to your router using an ethernet cable. If you connect, then that would indicate a wireless problem.
If you're already wired, then what's the output from:
ifconfig
It seems contradictory that you say the Internet works fine yet pacman says "network is unreachable".
Perhaps pacman uses a different port than port 80 and you have that port blocked? I don't know what port pacman uses.
Anyone else know and could this be the problem?

I'd assume that pacman would use port 80 to connect to http addresses (or 443 for https), just like everything else. Try reading and running through this article on installing in VMware. Then let us know if the problem persists!

It's a wired network but the Arch client is running in VMware Player, so it's sharing the PC's address. I have other VMs set up such as Ubuntu and Debian and they have installed no problem. If I could get to the GUI stage it would be OK, but of course I can't pacman xorg.

I have the same problem.
First I thought I was forgetting to set up the proxy (actually I was), but after that the network works OK, but pacman doesn't.
More info:
I'm running Arch through a vm in virtualbox using NAT. I'm under a proxy/firewall that prevents me to ping, but I do can wget (and it works). Mirrorlist is ok, and I can even wget something manually from the repository I'm using.

I fount the solution: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 62#p518462
It was really a proxy configuration problem.
