I don't know how many Arch users on the forum use Awesome or even use it on a laptop... but the Awesome IRC channel doesn't seem to be a lot of help...
I am trying to set up a battery monitor widget in awesome, the one that I am trying to work with is this one https://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Closu … ery_Widget. Even though awesome -k doesn't show any errors when I restart awesome the desktop is completely messed up.

Well you can account for any piece of code some guy wrote on the wiki. It's public. This seems to be coded by krigstask and I see him there every day.

You couldn't have picked a more complex widget for your first one. You can start simpler. Extract battery state from anywhere, from a utility like acpitool, from /sys/class/power_supply ... and feed it to your simple one-line textbox widget. Or try to use vicious widgets. They have a README. http://git.sysphere.org/vicious/snapsho … 0.2.tar.gz

You need to install an RTFM interface.
