How to automatically umount a removable drive if using HAL

Hi,
I use KDE and I mount a removable HDD (with a SATA->USB adapter). I would like to have it plugged in constantly (it has its own powersource) but make it spindown after certain time of inactivity. I can handle that part using hdparm already. The problem is that if the device was mounted, after an umount (that happens when I poweroff the computer) the drive spins up again.
Is there a way to make it umount the drive after some time of inactivity so that this problem can be minimized?

Thanks

So, what would prevent the drive to spin up, if you unmount it manually? What is the difference with unmounting it on PC shutdown? And why does the drive spins up after an unmount, because of the power supply?

Arch Linux is more than just GNU/Linux -- it's an adventure
pkill -9 systemd

The point is to umont *before* the drive spins down. And obviously I would like this to be done automatically after a certain period of inactivity.
I think the spin up occurs because umount implies flushing FS buffers, which seems reasonable.
