macbookpro5,5 has a noise after update?

was curious if other mbp users noticed a noise? i hadn't had it before, but after doing a large update i noticed it and it is driving me mad. it is like a pulsating, high pitched buzz originating near the fan area.

the noise goes away if i do something like play a flash video or whatever. anyone have any ideas what caused it and what i can do to remove it?

Does it matter if you run on battery or not, is the noise still there?

doesn't matter. the noise is still there.

i'm at kind of a loss for how to diagnose this. the whine starts just after udev starts up when i watch the boot screen.

Any errors in the logs? What do you use for power management?
You say it was a big update but maybe you can downgrade and see if it helps. Maybe it's a hardware problem.

Re: macbookpro5,5 has a noise after update?

i've only been using the default power management stuff. i had installed cpufreq-utils, sensors, and laptop-mode, but whether i load those or not, the sound persists.

the upgrade was from kernels 2.6.34 to 36, but after downgrading it didn't seem to matter. i upgraded like 200 something packages and didn't try downgrading them all. i'll probably try to downgrade them all this weekend and go through them one by one and see if anything changes (but i really don't want to do that).

until then, running glxgears in the background keeps it busy enough so i don't have to hear any whining.

edit: oh, and no errors i found in the logs.

Re: macbookpro5,5 has a noise after update?

I'm not a hardware guy, but maybe some electrical parts are producing that hum / buzz. I've seen a couple such cases on different forums, different computers - laptops and desktops alike. There are two ways of dealing with this: use headphones to block that awfully irritating sound or run something that will keep the cpu busy.
That noise was often absent when using Windows (none of computers was a Mac), so check that if you dual / trippleboot.

I have a mbp5.5 and do not hear any noise.
