Mounting truecrypt device on GPT WD Elements

I have successfully formatted /dev/sdb2 with truecrypt on my external USB WD Elements 1TB (formatted with GPT partition table), but I have never been able to mount it. I keep getting this error when attempting to mount (with the correct password):

device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: No such file or directory
Command failed

There is of course no problem when mounting a loopback file and not a real device file; I also suppose that all kernel modules are in place:

$ dmsetup version
Library version:   1.02.60 (2010-12-20)
Driver version:    4.19.1

$ dmsetup targets
crypt            v1.10.0
striped          v1.3.1
linear           v1.1.0
error            v1.0.1

I really have no clue about this problem! How can I debug it further and fix it?
