Compiz + GNOME: having trouble getting Compiz to autostart

I've read the wiki.

Also, the GDM docs say this gconf key might have something to do with it:

/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/wm_use_compiz
true|false (boolean)
Controls whether compiz is used as the window manager instead of metacity.

That doesn't make any difference for me, either.  The only way I can get Compiz going is by manually starting compiz-icon.  Otherwise only Metacity loads.

What am I missing?
