It took me an age to get to the bottom of this, and in the end, a sticky appeared right at the top of the Kwin KDE Forum page that I haven't seen referenced here. I have not idea why the following worked for me.
Basically, if your intel drivers are still giving you kwin problems, firstly avoid those currently in testing, create a ~/.drirc file and add the code as described here.
I realise that the it is usually not the Arch way to do things you simply do not understand (I'd love to know, truly), but perhaps this will be some use to someone else who is in a similar place as me.
