system freezes after connecting usb harddrive for a while

I do not know when this actually started, but it has been more than one month since the first time I realized it.

It works nicely when I connect my usb hard drive, but after approximately 10 minutes (or maybe 5 minutes), or after I have done something (copy/read some data), the whole system just freezes, and I can do nothing except reboot with the power button.

In the meantime, using usb mouth/keyboards and webcams are perfectly fine.

What is the problem and how can I fix it? I do not want to test it too often as it may destroy the data...

Having the exact same problem.  Would also be interested in any suggestions.

So, you mean that this is the same problem regarding udev as other threads have been talking about?

I went through some posts, and they were talking about intermittent boot failure. But for me, boot is always fine. More precisely, there is no problem at all as long as the usb hard drive is not connected...
