I have a multi card reader (internal) that i actually bought a month ago in order to be compliant with the "new" HC models....
My problem is that this card (SanDisk 4Gb) sometimes is recognized, sometimes is not... and i cannot find the reason for this behaviour....
dmesg does not show anything when i plug it phisically... however, the red led in the front panel of the card reader, indicating a present media, lights up.....
How can this be? Sometimes it just detects the card and i can normally mount it... sometimes, it does not.....
Im clueless on this one.... any help would be appreciated.

I have same problem with internal sd card reader on acer aspire 2920Z, though it was working like five or six months ago (last time I used it).

I don't see anything that looks like an sd card reader to me. Dmesg stays silent when I'm inserting it (the card is fine, it works in my zaurus pretty well)
UPD: oops, sorry, false alarm, it works now.

How did you do it?
I have a notebook Acer Aspire 5930g, and never could make Card Reader to work.

If you'll do "hwdetect --modules", and save results. Then plug a SD card to Card Reader and reboot, and after that make once more "hwdetect --modules" and compare these new results with previous, you'll see what modules need to be loaded to make Card Reader work. I've added them to rc.conf and rebooted, but they didn't load and modprobe didn't help.

The card reader works on my Acer 5335, but to be honest i cheated and used udiskie, and just in case it helps my reader is recognized by udev on boot.

I am going to try a Ubuntu live CD to check if this is a hardware problem or if there is some module that is not loaded......
The thing is that i already tried a SD card and a MicroSD card, and i cannot read neither of them........
However, the card reader has a USB port as well, which works....... i plug stuff on it, the stuff gets recognized... so,..... i dont really know......
Offline
OK: Under ubuntu, it works flawless... so, we can discard hardware problem.
I did lsmod under Ubuntu, to check the loaded modules....

Anyone can help me to investigate this?
Which can be the module that makes the sd card reader work as it should under ubuntu?

Run " sudo tail -f /var/log/messages.log" in a terminal, plug the SD card in and post the output here to this thread.

Nothing appears... the light of the device lights up, but its like if the system did not realize at all the card is there.....

I have a card reader connected to usb, although internal. If it's connected to the usb port and then I insert the card, it doesn't detect it. But, if I put the card in first and then the usb connector, it works perfectly. It's harder to test this on an internal reader though. I just don't know if it's hardware or software related.
Try
lsusb
before and after plugging it in.

lsusb shows no difference before and after plugging the card.
Im starting to believe it has something to do with some module not being loaded, or blacklisted or whatever.....
I have a file called "/etc/modprobe.d/usb-load-ehci-first.conf"
Having this lines:
install ohci_hcd /sbin/modprobe ehci_hcd ; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ohci_hcd $CMDLINE_OPTS
install uhci_hcd /sbin/modprobe ehci_hcd ; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install uhci_hcd $CMDLINE_OPTS
I'm a bit lost in this issue but i can assure that the device works properly in ubuntu and windows..... so this must be system-related......
Help please...

I think I suffered from the same problem as you did, and I managed to find a solution
I revised the wiki page accordingly: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ac … ard_Reader
See the section on adding pcie_ports=native to the kernel command line.
At least, it works on the Acer Aspire One. Don't actually know if you have this model of laptop, now that I think about it. Trying won't hurt, though.

Weird: After upgrading to gnome3.... the problem seems to be gone by itself...
Maybe removing the hal daemon and adding the dbus daemon did the trick......
Im just happy i got rid of this huge probem
Thanks!!!
