I switched our office computers at the school from Gnome to KDE. They like KDE much better but now there is no Chinese input. Openoffice2 and KDE bot h read Chinese fine but whereas previously the command of ctrl-alt-3 let one type away in Chinese now nothing happens. The xinitrc was untouched during the change.

How did you input Chinese?

We used xcin, which is still there, and Da I, Big easy, for the input system. I also upgraded xfree, would that have changed the configuration?
Also, is SCIM better than xcin? If so why? I guess it is time for me to learn more about this.

Personally I will bet SCIM better than XCIN. XCIN seems quite old. However if you use KDE, I suggest you try SKIM (based on SCIM but with KDE GUI), or you can give FCITX( http://www.fcitx.org/)a try if you can use Cangjie, which depends on only X but need a little manual configuration.
Go linuxsir.org (www.linuxsir.org) for reference, where is a Chinese Archlinux forum too.
