X segfaults with nvidia driver after -Syu

Hi everyone, I come to ask some help about a videocard/xserver problem. This is not my primary computer, but I have this old box connected to my tv for MPD and Boxee. Last december, I upgraded all my system's packages, and now xorg seams to be broken. I tried to pin down the problem googling and searching the forums but with no success. I tried reverting to the old package but it still segfaulted. So now I tried the ultimate thing and re-installed Arch from scratch. Still no success. I have been using this set-up before and it was working great...

I am using the proprietary driver because Boxee needs composite, and also because this driver is the only one that makes my console look OK while using TV-Out.

I don't have a fix, but I do have what appears to be the same segfault problem. I have had three hard lockups since an Syu a few days ago which upgraded the following packages : atkmm (2.22.1-2 -> 2.22.2-1) ccache (3.1.3-1 -> 3.1.4-1) usbutils (0.91-4 -> 001-2) module-init-tools (3.12-1 -> 3.12-2) kernel26 (2.6.36.2-1 -> 2.6.36.3-1) libsmbios (2.2.26-1 -> 2.2.26-2) openvpn (2.1.3-1 -> 2.1.4-1) and upgraded xorg-xdm (1.1.10-1 -> 1.1.10-2). I suppose that the kernel and x-org.xdm upgrades are the only likely causes, but I have given the full list in case any wiser person knows better.

My card is GeForce 8400 GS running xorg-server 1.9.2-2 and nvidia 260.19.29-1
The NVIDIA(0): WAIT lines in the following extract from Xorg.0.log are new in the most recent crash, the remainder is the same each time.

It is hard to know whether an intermittent crash has been fixed, but shortly after posting I experimented with deleting my xorg.conf, which was fairly ancient, and allowing xorg to do its own detection. The only manual amendment I had to make to 10-evdev.conf was to set my gb keyboard layout. I did not experience any freezes after that, and I am still freeze-free under the new nvidia 260.19.36-1 which I installed last Friday.
