Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

After the update to 4.8 all my "extract here" menu items are gone, I have un/installed thunar, thunar-archive-plugin, xarchiver, squeeze, ark, & file-roller trying to get the functionality back but to no avail. I am at a loss where to turn to next with this issue, I know its trivial but when your used to using a thing for years then its gone you miss it.

Regards

Just installed xfce and was wondering why the extract plugin was not working. So I guess its an issue with 4.8. I just hope they get it fixed soon. Sorry I can't be of any help..

I think aur/thunar-archive-plugin-git had worked with xfce4-devel... Maybe just an update missing.

It works with the thunar-vfs2gio.patch patch from aur/thunar-archive-plugin-devel

How much of a step is it away from the latest 4.8? I guess what I mean would be, is it stable enough to use daily or is that feature not worth the hassle? Packer is wanting to also install:

Aur Targets    (9): thunar-devel xfce4-dev-tools-devel xfce4-panel-devel exo-devel garcon-devel libxfce4ui-devel xfconf-devel libxfce4util-devel thunar-archive-plugin-devel
Pacman Targets (6): chrpath glade gtk-doc intltool perl-extutils-depends perl-extutils-pkgconfig

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

You can apply the patch to the current version of thunar-archive-plugin (0.2.4-6).

Here is the PKBUILD: http://ompldr.org/vNzJicw/thunar-archiv … src.tar.gz

It works very well.

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

My meta info plugin for Thunar is not working either (for example, mp3 files).
Also, as you said above, the archive plugin isn't working either.

Also, my trash icon has totally disappeared.. adding it as an applet in the taskbar, creates a RED circle with a white minus sign icon.
The error when clicking is: FAILED TO CONNECT TO THE TRASH.  Operation not supported.

So what am I missing?

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

You need gvfs for trash.

Why was that not included as a prerequisite?

I will try adding gvfs.

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

Because 1.) not everyone needs the Trash or remote filesystem support and 2.) Thunar will work just fine without GVFS. Hence why its in optdepends.

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

Thank you for explaining that.   Update: my trash now works.

Could you guess as to what I am missing that would cause the thunar media tags plugin not to work/function?

No offense, but that reasoining is ludicrous. Trash is fully intergrated into thunar, so in effect everyone does need the trash or it wouldn't be thunar. I could see that reasoning if trash could be disabled.  Nautilus has gvfs as a depend for the same reason.

But hey, this is arch...Sometimes the "Arch way" logic makes no sense.

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

You know I just tested it and Thunar doesn't need gvfs to send files to the trash. If you delete a file, Thunar still moves it to ~/.local/share/Trash/files/. The only thing missing is the icon in the shortcuts side pane.

Confirmed, no extract button...

Do you mean, you have "trash" in thunar's right panel, xfce-panel, or desktop? For me it is yes, yes and no sad I do have gvfs up and running. How do I fix this?

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

OK, I got it.

In case someone else has this problem. The Trash and Removable Media icons were checked in Desktop Settings/Icons, but none of them showed up on the Desktop. The reason turned out to be the way how I started up xfce: instead of

exec ck-launch-session xfce4-session

in my .xinitrc, it should be

exec ck-launch-session startxfce4

startxfce4 is a script wrapper for xfce4-session, which also sets some env variables...

Thanks anyway smile

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

According to the bug report for this it is supposed to be fixed with version 0.2.4-7. I tried this new version and it still doesn't work. Anyone else here try the new version and have success?

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

Now that the thunar-archive-plugin  works..  how about assisting in the thunar-media-tags-plugin?

I heard one other human say that didn't work either.

Put a MP3 in your home directory or elsewhere, and right click on that mp3 file in Thunar, and no meta info windows shows.

So the new version of the archive plugin works for you?

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

Yes, I just finished doing a # pacman -Syu

partial log:
[2011-01-22 19:40] upgraded thunar-archive-plugin (0.2.4-6 -> 0.2.4-8)
[2011-01-22 19:40] upgraded xfce4-xkb-plugin (0.5.3.3-3 -> 0.5.3.3-4)

and it works.

However, the thunar-media-tags-plugin is another issue.

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

It looks like the first version that was to fix this didn't work. I just upgraded from 0.2.4-7 to 0.2.4-8 and all is well now with the archive plugin for me.

Re: Thunar-Archive-Plugin after Xfce 4.8 update

Why archive-plugin still depends on thunar-vfs? It carries on hal, hal-info and dmidecode? I removed all these 4, and plugin seems to work anyway. (but I didn't do deep test)
