[Solved] Intel i3 540 HD Graphics crap 3D performance

Hi,
I got myself a new system:
shuttle SH55J2
Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU 540  @ 3.07GHz Clarkdale

This comes with the built-in intel HD Graphics, which should perform quite well for simple 3D games.
See:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/2921/3
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … _gpu&num=1

However, it performs very badly right now, for example the game 'osmos' needs several seconds to render one frame.
Urban Terror (which according to phoronix should run quite well) reaches about 2fps.
I checked the wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel) but it does not list these new chips.

I think there could be 2 reasons, but I need your help:
Idea one:

~ dmesg | grep -i intel

HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: setting latency timer to 64
hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj.

idea 2 : do i use the correct X driver?

~ pacman -Qs intel
local/dtrx 7.0-1
    A intelligent archive extraction tool
local/intel-dri 7.10-1
    Mesa DRI drivers for Intel
local/xf86-video-intel 2.13.0-4 (xorg-video-drivers)
    X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers

I found on the intel website i need the "mesa" drivers, so that looks okay, although it suprises me the HD graphics are not explicitly mentioned.
The intel driver seems to recognize the Clarkdale graphics, but OTOH it says "Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810" ?? (i810 is a very old chip, according to wikipedia and other resources)

Re: [Solved] Intel i3 540 HD Graphics crap 3D performance

Trimming stolen memory is ok. The driver will allocate memory later anyway, as needed.

The reason you see "Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810," is because of your grepping, if you look at the full log, you'll see all other chipsets listed in further lines

[ 7.642] (II) intel: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810,

I can't see anything wrong in the logs you've posted. What does glxinfo (it's in mesa-demos) say, particularly the OpenGL renderer string?

Re: [Solved] Intel i3 540 HD Graphics crap 3D performance

Arch i686 on a Core i3 550, Gigabyte H55N-USB3 motherboard. Osmos runs decently here. I could also play WoW, Half-Life 2 (in dxlevel 70 mode.)

I don't think idea one is a problem because I've got something similar:

The reason you see "Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810," is because of your grepping, if you look at the full log, you'll see all other chipsets listed in further lines

oops, you're right. it lists clarkdale.

I can't see anything wrong in the logs you've posted. What does glxinfo (it's in mesa-demos) say, particularly the OpenGL renderer string?

OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:
(...)

full glxinfo: http://sprunge.us/QiMZ

@stqn: I forgot to mention: I first tried the same packages as yours, then tried getting the mesa stuff from testing (so I have a newer package then you) but the issue is with both.

Did you need to do anything special? or just install the package and you could start playing games?

OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

^^ That's your problem. Hmm, are you in the video group? If not, add yourself to it, log out, log back in (or, to be completely sure, reboot). Then check the renderer string again.

I don't remember doing anything special, however I am part of the video group (though I have no idea about the point of that.)

How can you recommend him to reboot ?! this is not windows, log out and log in back is enough.
