I don't see anything fatal in the log... is it from running as root, or a normal user?
Just what does happen when it fails?
Make sure you've got a program (terminal/WM/etc.) loading in your .xinitrc (or however you plan to manage your X session). I seem to recall some wierdness with that when I first set up X on Arch...
