The new line in the PKGBUILD for the -3 and -4 series compresses the modules via gzip which according to the comment saves 100 MB of space. I don't understand but somehow the size of the compiled package is about 40 % larger larger now:
34.8 MB -- kernel26-2.6.37-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
Compared to
25.0 MB -- kernel26-2.6.37-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
If the modules are compressed shouldn't that equate to a reduction in package size as well as installed size? Am I missing something?

xz can probably not compress gzip compressed data very well resulting in this increase.

A little counterintuitive but makes sense... at least the installed package is smaller. Thanks for the reply.
