KDE 4.6.0 update : goodbye phonon-xine, welcome PulseAudio?

Hi,

I just upgraded to KDE 4.6.0 after having read the announcement on the Archlinux site.

A little abstract on how to reconfigure audio (not using phonon-xine anymore) would be helpful.

Any reason you're ditching phonon-xine?

I was asking for a passport picture, you give me a 2 x 3 m oil painting. Reminds me of the French saying "Hell is paved with good intentions".

Well, if by passport picture you mean hand-holding, then yes I'm teaching you to fish.

You're expected to try things out yourself and ask if you have any questions. Not ask before trying.

Just install phonon-vlc or phonon-gstreamer and select the one you like more from the sound settings.

Btw, you don't need PulseAudio because phonon-xine is deprecated (they serve differen purposes - hardware communication and control vs. audio/video player). PA is useful when you want to use some of its goodies (such as bluetooth headphones through bluedevil) but for simple setups ALSA should suffice.

Just a note, maybe my news wasn't clear: if you use Xine then you need PulseAudio, otherwise not.

By "passport picture", I meant something like sharing a cooking receipt. Not your complete PHD course on food chemistry.

phonon-xine still works fine for me on my KDE 4.6 desktop.

Nobody said that it would stop working. The note said that this will be the last version, so it is deprecated and will no longer be maintained.

Re: KDE 4.6.0 update : goodbye phonon-xine, welcome PulseAudio?

I've just tried phonon-gstreamer and phonon-vlc but I've gone back to phonon-xine as this seems to be the only backend which supports the equaliser in Amarok. Maybe I missed something?
