[req] Firefox 1.0.2...

It's a security bugfix. I don't think it will cause any problems.

Re: [req] Firefox 1.0.2...

I've noticed firefox and thunderbird are slower to be updated than other arch packages.  I'm so grateful for the general up-to-dated-ness of arch that it's hard to complain, but these ones drag unnecessarily IMO.

Thunderbird and firefox are maintaind by the same person. Gues the guy is busy, maybe he has a life or something :?

a well if you realy need something i gues you can make a package yourself.

Re: [req] Firefox 1.0.2...

ya... most likely just changing the version number in the PKGBUILD should do it

Re: [req] Firefox 1.0.2...

I've certainly tried building them myself, just changing the version number, but I get an error during the build process.  Mozilla and related packages have always been hard to build.  If it was that easy, I could be the package maintainer!

Re: [req] Firefox 1.0.2...

you know that mozilla offers i686 arch builds of firefox/etc and those have an auto-update detection thing... and usually the respond a little better than the ones in repos. And they're really easy to install wink

Of course - it's just my preference to use only arch pachages.

That was my preference until today. I will no longer use the ArchLinux Firefox package. It seems to be unmaintained and not taking care of security fixes.

The package was flagged out of date more then a week ago and still nothing happens.
Oh well, just forget it, take your time, I will use the binary of mozilla.org.

Re: [req] Firefox 1.0.2...

Yep, I give up.  The mozilla.org binary it is.

Maybe the maintainer (Dale Blount?) should offer up the reins to someone more able to keep up with it?

Yes, IMHO Firefox and Thunderbird are one of the most important packages for many of us, somebody should email Dale Blunt and ask what's the hold up...

Re: [req] Firefox 1.0.2...

or you could contribute and try to make a PKGBUILD that works

I don't use firefox (I use strictly console) so I'm not that worried... but if I was as concerned by the fact that the package is outdated as you seem to be, I would try to get one to work.

I'm 99% sure it's just a version number change in the PKGBUILD - and firefox doesn't take *that long* to build... this shouldn't be that difficult

however, I have a feeling he may be removing the official branding...

I'll probably go with the mozilla.org binary myself....

Re: [req] Firefox 1.0.2...

What I was getting to is that... we're all friends here (except a select few tongue)

The official maintainer might be busy... there is nothing wrong with that... so someone could create a PKGBUILD... it works... send it to the maintainer...

Here we go:

# $Id: PKGBUILD,v 1.19 2005/03/03 14:16:33 dale Exp $
# Maintainer: Dale Blount <dale@archlinux.org>

pkgname=mozilla-firefox
pkgver=1.0.2
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="Standalone web browser from mozilla.org"
makedepends=('zip')
depends=('gtk2' 'libidl2' 'mozilla-common')
replaces=('mozilla-firebird' 'phoenix')

build() {
  cd $startdir/src/mozilla
  patch -Np0 -i $startdir/src/mozilla-1.7.3-ft2.patch || return 1
  patch -Np0 -i $startdir/src/launcher.patch || return 1
  sed "s@#CFLAGS#@$CFLAGS@g" $startdir/src/mozconfig >.mozconfig
  export MOZ_PHOENIX=1

  # fix typo (mozilla bug 258177)
  sed -i "s@destdir@DESTDIR@" $startdir/src/mozilla/browser/app/Makefile.in || return 1

  ./configure
  make || return 1
  make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install || return 1

  # initialize some data so that firefox will run as a non-root user
  cd $startdir/pkg/opt/mozilla/lib/firefox-$pkgver/
  tar zxf $startdir/src/mozilla-firefox-nonroot.tar.gz || return 1

  cd $startdir/pkg/opt/mozilla/lib && ln -sf firefox-$pkgver firefox

  rm -rf $startdir/pkg/opt/mozilla/share
  rm -rf $startdir/pkg/opt/mozilla/lib/pkgconfig
  rm -rf $startdir/pkg/opt/mozilla/include

  # Remove useless default profile setup
  rm -rf $startdir/pkg/opt/mozilla/bin/defaults

  # Place these in /usr until all common desktops support icon lookups in XDG_DATA_DIRS
  install -dD -m755 $startdir/pkg/usr/share/applications
  install -dD -m755 $startdir/pkg/usr/share/pixmaps
  install -m644 $startdir/src/mozilla-firefox.png $startdir/pkg/usr/share/pixmaps/
  install -m644 $startdir/src/mozilla-firefox.desktop $startdir/pkg/usr/share/applications/
}

All I did was change the version number and the related md5sum. Apart from the 1.0.2 source, all the other files are in /var/abs/etwork/mozilla-firefox.

One more thing - it works  big_smile - posting from 1.0.2 right now.

A couple of firsts here:
- This is the first PKGBUILD I've posted here.
- This is the first time the Debian side of my laptop got a new version before the Arch side!

Mozilla firefox is a real beast for compilation, I have written a PKGBUILD for nightly cvs build, you can seek it as a reference.

I don't think so. The branding issue's been solved... I don't think the holdup will last more than a couple days.

I think it's no good changing just the version numbers of the 1.0.1 build and having the patches in the build that have obviously been fixed already.

Yeah, probably not the ideal solution -on the other hand, I didn't see any other solutions in the thread, so when it worked for me, I posted it, as dadexter suggested earlier.
