I've just "upgraded" digiKam from 1.7.0 to 1.8.0 and it would appear that Nepomuk tags are no longer supported. Before tackling the digiKam developers about this, I would be obliged if someone would be kind enough to confirm that the "Nepomuk Tab" is NOT there in "Settings -> Configure digiKam -> Metadata"
Thanks in advance .....

Okay, i don't use nepomuk, but you can select in digikam that it stores the tags in the picture files and than any file indexer should be possible to read them.

In previous versions of digiKam, nepomuk support had to be actually enabled to be able to embed the nepomuk data in the images. This was done by using the Nepomuk Tab as I described in my original post. The Nepomuk Tab is NOT there in 1.8.0 and it is now not possible to embed nepomuk data in images. I've proved this by creating a new tag and adding it to a few images and then embedding the data in the images. If I do a nepomuk search for the newly created tagged images, nepomuk doesn't find them! In addition, if I view the image(s) properties with Dolphin, the new tag isn't there but if I view the properties of any images that I tagged and embedded with 1.7.0, the tags are there.

I've just had a reply to my question on the digiKam users mailing list from the author and he states that "your digiKam is just not compiled with nepomuk support. It's optional ...". That explains it very nicely but how/where do I request a re-compile of digiKam with Nepomuk support - anyone?

Could be. Maybe I built it with soprano 2.5.63-1 which had nepomuk disabled. Can you rebuild it and see if is solved? I'll do a test ASAP.

Many thanks indeed for responding so quickly but I can't rebuild it as I don't know how.

I'll rebuild it right now and check if it's solved (by the way I confirm the nepomuk tab has disappeared)

I rebuilt the package against the updated soprano( 2.5.63-2) and the nepomuk option appears again.

digikam 1.8.0-3 released. I'm marking this as solved.

In previous versions of digiKam, nepomuk support had to be actually enabled to be able to embed the nepomuk data in the images.
Is there any advantage to store nepomuk data in the images instead of storing the informations in the EXIF or IPTC headers and let nepomuk/strigi scan the files to find out what is written there? And what do i see on a pc without kde if i look at the details of an image file? But thanks for the hint to look at the configuration because i ever overseen this in digikam.

There are some reasons:
1 - Strigi is resources hungry
2- Strigi doesn't have a good client (IMHO)
Besides: who said you can't store the data within the files? I do that as well as in nepomuk hehe
