Since I upgraded to KDE 4.6, i can't enable desktop effects any more. When I open the desktop effects settings, it says that it can't enable desktop effects because of the following reason, but there is no reason given. (The box below to enable the effects is checked, but disabled. It also says that the desktop effects are disabled temporary.)
I'm using a nvidia graphics card 9600 GT with the current nvidia driver.
Does anyone know what could be the reason for that behavior or does anyone have the same problems?

I've got a GeForce 210 and use the nouveau driver. Everything works but the sphere setting (and I so much prefer it to the ugly cube!).

Same card here and no problem with desktop effects using nvidia driver. Are you using OpenGL?

Yes (at least glxgears works).

I also had this problem a few weeks ago with KDE 4.5... You have to edit your kwinrc (.kde4/share/config/) . You have to change these parameter to the following values:
CheckIsSafe=false
DisableChecks=true
OpenGLIsUnsafe=false
I got this information from the KWin developer. Hope this works for you!
