Key repeat works, normal input does not

I have had this annoying issue for a while now and I can't figure out what's wrong. The issue is with the left arrow key. Key repeat works, but not normal input, i.e. single key presses. Using xev the events seems correct. All other keys work!  What the heck could be wrong?

I have tested in alsamixer and XBMC. You can imagine how annoying it is to have to HOLD left arrow to move left, and then obviously always moves too far.

Running Xorg 1.9.2, Linux 2.6.36, Archlinux x86_64 on a Thinkpad T61p laptop.

Also, I have tested with an external USB keyboard - same problem.

Re: Key repeat works, normal input does not

I should have realized this sooner that it was my .xmodmap that was causing the issue. I was rebinding caps lock to Escape, and apparently that messed things up. Guess the way I did it before is not the correct way in later versions of Xorg. Anyway, problem solved.
