I had nouveau-dri working with my GeForce 210 card and thought I'd see what the nvidia-256 driver as recommended by NVIDIA themselves would do.
It worked but not as well as the nouveau driver. So I got rid of it again, reinstalled nouveau and now X doesn't come up. I hate it when that happens!!!
Xorg.0.log states something along the lines of:
Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp - so I googled that, reset grub to start off big and ugly, have kms start late, i.e. I did everything afaik to get kms/fb not to start in 32bpp. No joy...
The the backtrace has gruesome lines like /lib/libpthread.so.0, /lib/libc.so.6 and stuff like that in it which does not make any sense to me until it comes up with a segmentation fault.
I believe that the colour depth is still the problem, but how to convince it to stay at 24? I even tried an xorg.conf with just a screen section - or should that be in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ somewhere?
All pure rocket science to me at this stage...
SOLVED - stupid me! I still had libdrm-git on the system from earlier attempts at nouveau-git

Hmm, why is the nvidia 256.x driver (which has issues with Xorg) is recommended ? Why didn't you try the latest one ?

Better ask nvidia that... I tried version 260 as well but it threw up all over the place. nouveau proved more stable so I'd like it back again.
