latest consolekit and xdm (logout/shutdown and removable devices)

Since the latest upgrade to consolekit 0.4.3-1, desktops launched by xdm from the local console are not created as "local". This denies the usage of logout/shutdown from the desktop, and also mounting removable devices support, since all sessions are always considered remote. These problems could be avoided tweaking policykit and adding the user to the "power" group but that is not the proper solution.

I have filed a bug (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22671) and proposed a patch to integrate consolekit support into xdm, as another display managers already have (like gdm). Meanwhile anyone can build the package by himself, as with any other AUR package. The tarball is here:

    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22671?getfile=6342

Note that once installed this new xdm version, you must change the way you invoke XFCE, since the session is now directly handled by xdm. For example, you'll have to replace:

  exec ck-launch-session startxfce4

By simply:

  exec startxfce4

Yesterday I tested gdm but has a lot of dependencies for my taste. Slim was too slow by some unknown reason. The other alternative would be to use lxdm, but this manager lacks XDMCP compliance and also seems not to support multiple X server instances to instantaneously switch them (e.g. in xdm you can have one server in CTRL-ALT-F7 and other in CTRL-ALT-F8, by simply adding a line to /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers for an additional :1 session).

Good old xdm!. If you like it, maybe you'll like to try my skin contribution:

Your patch worked like a charm for me - it solved that unsolvable "Not Authorized" auto-mount bug. Thanks a lot!

Re: latest consolekit and xdm (logout/shutdown and removable devices)

I have not tried the patch yet, but it looks like console kit issue is the reason gnome-power-manager is not suspending my monitors after the specified amount of idle time.
gnome-power-manager reports the following when attempting to blank the screens. "ignoring as not on active console".

Thanks!

Open your own topic mikej, we're not dumping every remotely consolekit related problem into one topic. This is about Xdm, yours is about gnome-power-manager.

Re: latest consolekit and xdm (logout/shutdown and removable devices)

Used the patch with your PKGBUILD and it works for me as well! It's safe to say that you have provided a clean solution to this problem. No fiddling around with policykit and groups. Much thanks!

I have been using your Arch XDM theme since I first started using XDM as my display manager, and I love what you've done! Don't change anything about it. It's very simple, yet contemporary, and fits right in a 2011+ world.

Just noticed: same theme, different package: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=27463

Same theme, really? How did that happen?

Good work, but remember the patch needs to go upstream. If suse or fedora have not already submitted it, you should. If they have, you should find out if it's been accepted or not.
