Linux newbie here...
I'm using an ancient Compaq 7110US series computer
1.3ghz AMD Athlon... 512KB DDR2 ram... woo. Because this thing is so ancient, I decided to experiment with Linux and try to get comfortable with the OS... figuring... hell, if any harm is done to this thing, it's old and on its last stand anyway. Why not have a little fun first.
The real problem I've been having is...
I had a friend of mine hand me an Arch Linux install disc. I ran it, had a few problems here and there because I was using a wireless card instead of using the CAT5 and being directly plugged in... but when I went to go use my webcam, I'm having a damn hard time trying to get the thing to work right. I've tried using the Arch Linux wiki, and the language might as well be in some dead language that no one knows about, because when I can't directly ask someone a question, I have a hard time learning or even remembering what to do! I'm using a Logitech QuickCam Express.

HELP! This thing is driving me -insane- and I have no idea how to fix what I did! At one point I was able to see myself in Cheese... I couldn't edit the webcam properties, record, but I could see myself on the screen. Then when I go to use any client that asks for a webcam like Skype, it isn't even detected.

The USB camera is plugged directly into the computer.

what the result of lsmod?
BTW use tags to post your code. Makes for shorter pages.

OK. As far as I can see you seem to have all you need to have the video camera working.
Now ... there are some chipsets that are not Linux friendly. Did you know that?
There is a site that you may find useful here: http://www.club.cc.cmu.edu/~mdille3/doc/linux_cameras/
Notice in that site a link to another web site that talks about supported and not so well supported video cams. Take a look and see if there is a work around for yours and go from there.
Hope this helps.

Are you trying to compile a module for your camera?
Because that's what it looks like.
... and if that is what you are doing you just need to do:
pacman qc-usb-messenger and it will be installed for you.
R.
edit: some bad typing

I used pacman -S qc-usb-messenger but my webcam is still not detected by any programs. Now I can't see myself through Cheese, and Skype *still*doesn't detect a webcam.
Edit: I have that same problem from time to time.

OK. Take a look here: http://home.mag.cx/messenger/
That's the developer of the driver for you web cam. See if you find any valuable info.
Did you find any support info specific to your web cam in the other site I sent?

It says that my camera is supported and downloading the .tar and making it would fix the problem... but...
The second link is for QuickCam Messenger and I am using an Express. According to what I've read so far, the Messenger is the buggy one, but I shouldn't be having problems with Express.
The first link is basically downloading the .tar instead of using pacman from what I gathered. Unless I'm missing something, the qc-usb driver has been known to allow this webcam to work.

Is there something i'm missing? Not aware of? Or does it just not -work-? I don't understand where the problem is coming from T-T
