I decided to switch from dzen2 + conky to xmobar, but since I missed some of the dzen formatting features, so I added them to xmobar.
So now xmobar has xbm images, positioning, rectangles and circles, and a clearer syntax for bg and fg color.
If someone wants to try it out here's my fork: https://github.com/rostayob/xmobar , the changes are "Quick Start" section of the readme.

Oh no, some of my hacks are obsolete! Looks very interesting. I will check this out more later.

Actually I am thinking of implementing a system tray in xmonad, but I may need some more knowledge of xlib
