I think it has to do with the search box updating the location.hash, which is triggering onhashupdate too. I think this causes a weird condition whereby the results are being generated twice and stuffed into the display.
I probably need to add a guard condition of some kind to the onhashupdate. hmmm.

Just make sure to refresh the page (1 hour cache) to get v1.3 with the fix.

Fixed an issue with very slow clearing of old results for every large result sets (such as searches for 'python').

Turns out, jquery.empty is pokey because of how thoroughly it cleans up after itself (removes bindings and jquery 'data' from all child elements as it removes them). Since I wasn't storing anything, nor binding actions, to any of the result set data, using innerHTML to overwrite it was MUCH faster.
