irssi won't connect to Freenode

Hello,
Does anyone know why irssi won't connect to freenode (I am in the process of configuring it and username has been set).

15:09 -!- Irssi: Looking up irc.freenode.net
15:09 -!- Irssi: Connecting to irc.freenode.net [xx.xx.xx.xx.] port 6667
15:12 -!- Irssi: Unable to connect server irc.freenode.net port 6667
             [Connection timed out]

Based on the minimal information above, my guess is network issues.

Sorry I don't have too much else to go on at this point. I have zero issues with internet (ethernet or wireless). Everything has worked fine (including irssi on fedora prior to switching to arch...)

Well erm...

Maybe you could check your config? Try the web interface for freenode, to see if that works? Another IRC client? Try a few alternatives, test a few workarounds, bref: narrow it down?

And why are you hiding the server's IP btw? I don't think it's sensitive intel .

To the Newbie corner it is.

I installed and tried with xchat, and this did not work either (tried fiddling with connection settings - changing port number for freenode server (6667, 8001). It does seem like a network issue, but I am not sure what it is. Like I said, it has worked previously.

Is this a home network or a business/enterprise/school/etc... network?

Ask the network admins - maybe they are blocking IRC traffic.

Does it work when you set up irssi for Freenode with SSL? That's a different port. And maybe a scan (nmap?) might indeed reveal whether port 6667 is being blocked or not.
