[SOLVED] Thinkpad R61 thermal problems

My 2 years old R61 thinkpad starts shutting down under high cpu load (compiling stuff). I've found this in the /var/log/kernel.log:

Feb  4 11:06:44 archpad kernel: thinkpad_acpi: THERMAL EMERGENCY: a sensor reports something is extremely hot!
Feb  4 11:06:44 archpad kernel: thinkpad_acpi: temperatures (Celsius): 82 40 35 60 50 N/A 32 N/A 37 43 53 N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A
Feb  4 11:18:07 archpad kernel: thinkpad_acpi: THERMAL EMERGENCY: a sensor reports something is extremely hot!
Feb  4 11:18:07 archpad kernel: thinkpad_acpi: temperatures (Celsius): 88 43 37 66 50 N/A 32 N/A 40 47 59 N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A
Feb  4 11:18:07 archpad kernel: Critical temperature reached (102 C), shutting down.

Why does it say that the critical temperature (102) has been reached, when the temperature readings are maximally 88?
EDIT: The shown temperatures are from coretemp, but the thermal emergency comes from ACPI.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad R61 thermal problems

I've opened the laptop and cleaned the fan with a vacuum cleaner, although it was not very dusty. The overheating is still the same.

In the following output from sensors, it is mainly temp2, which is sky-rocketing, under heavy cpu load. Where can i find out where the sensor is located?

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:       +45.0°C  (crit = +127.0°C)
temp2:       +37.0°C  (crit = +100.0°C)

thinkpad-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
fan1:       2853 RPM
temp1:       +45.0°C
temp2:       +36.0°C
temp3:       +32.0°C
temp4:       +49.0°C
temp5:       +50.0°C
temp6:           N/A
temp7:       +24.0°C
temp8:           N/A
temp9:       +33.0°C
temp10:      +38.0°C
temp11:      +39.0°C
temp12:          N/A
temp13:          N/A
temp14:          N/A
temp15:          N/A
temp16:          N/A

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad R61 thermal problems

I had a similar problem with overheating and it wasn't caused by the dust, Turns out that the termal paste between the CPU and  the heat pipe degraded over time and wasn't doing it's job anymore. Removing it and applying a new layer solved the issue. I could also add that it had gotten pretty solid and the head pipe was stuck; I had to remove it while it was still hot. I think a hair-dryer would have done the job, too.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad R61 thermal problems

I think the degradation of thermal paste is a plausible cause, because the temperature increase happens so rapidly, that there is not much time for the fan to start spinning, and only one of the sensor readings is rising at that speed. I'll get me some arctic silver thermal paste, and some 99% Isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol) to remove the old paste.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad R61 thermal problems

The problem was solved by replacing the thermal paste with Arctic Cooling MX2. Now my CPU temperature is under 60 degrees C under full load. Thanks for the tip z0id.
