[SOLVED] Cursor theme isn't always applied

Ok so i followed the arch wiki on cursors to get a new cursor theme up and running. I did all that is said to do but my cursor theme is only showwn when im hovering over something like a text box or link or edge of window for resizing. any other time it is that lowtech looking pixelated stock cursor. How do i get the theme to always be shown

If you are running a desktop environment such as kde or gnome, then you would need to set it up in your kde or gnome settings.

If not, then there is another option. It's called xsettingsd, and can be used to impliment those settings that are found in kde or gnome, but without those libraries. I don't use a DE myself, and found that it meets my needs just fine.

well I'm using gnome, and have the theme i want applied in the gnome appearance application. But still the theme is only shown under the circumstances listed in my 1st post

Try a different cursor as a check - the one you have might not be working right.

all themes seem to behave in the same manner. Shown when interacting with objects such as window resizing and links but not present when it should just be the pointer.

There is a known issue with Xfce, but since you're using GNOME, try this and see if it you notice anything.

Make a directory under ~/.icons/ named "default" if it doesn't already exist, and just create a single file within called "index.theme".

$ mkdir -p ~/.icons/default/
$ nano ~/.icons/default/index.theme

Have index.theme contain only these three lines.

[Icon Theme]
Name = Default
Inherits = NameOfDesiredTheme

Now see if it uses your desired cursor theme no matter where you move your mouse pointer to.

NameOfDesiredTheme should be typed out exactly as you see under GNOME Appearance Settings.

I only use Xfce on Arch, so can't speak for GNOME on Arch, since I only use GNOME on Ubuntu (10.04), but for some reason with GNOME 2.30 on Ubuntu, it works fine without modify the user's local ~/.icons. I do need to edit /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme if I want the same cursor for applications run as root, such as Synaptic, or on the GDM Login Screen.

Seems there might be a difference in your configurations or just in general Arch/GNOME-2.32 vs. Ubuntu/GNOME-2.30.

I believe that in the case of editing ~/.icons/default/index.theme, it will use your desired cursor theme for Qt applications as well (VLC, Vidalia, etc), so you should be all set there if you have any Qt programs installed.

yea when i used to use ubuntu this didnt seem to be a problem. Seeing as it is my first arch install, i might have done something wrong, who knows.. but thanks for all that good info
