System freezes when running Compiz or 3D games

I can't run Compiz or play 3D games (tested with Spring RTS) without my system freezing. Compiz will usually run fine for a few minutes until I ALT+TAB or switch to a different workspace. I haven't tweaked my xorg.conf since I'm pretty clueless about which options can/should be enabled for my particular model/chipset, and I've been told newer versions of X don't really require this config file anyway. I have an ATI Radeon Mobility X600 (RV380 chipset), using the open source driver (xf86-video-ati) with KMS enabled.
