Hi,
After installing ALSA (following the wiki), I discovered that, independent of application, the sound was not balanced - more came out the left headphone than the right. This is not the case when I boot windows or plug the headphones into another music player, so I think it must have something to do with linux.
I have also installed pulseaudio, which had no effect, but did make it easier to modify the balance, and when I drag it 3/4 of the way over, it sounds fine. Of course, maximizing or minimizing the sound resets this balance, which is annoying.
Any ideas?
UPDATE: Even worse, the balance jumps around. Sometimes the right speaker entirely cuts out, which is really irritating...

Try running alsaconf and then adjust your volume with alsamixer.
