I have recently removed hal from my system and soundconverter has gnome-python --> hal dependecy.
Is there any hal-free alternative to this application?
Thanks in advance.

Well, you didn't consider using wine and eac or foobar2000 ??
Not really Linux, but imho the better proggies for encoding. One can use for example the nero aac encoder which is arguably better than faac. Or the aotuv oggenc. which is tweaked for better output.

soundKonverter is an excellent GUI frontend.

soundkonverter is great. The Clementine music player also features an audio transcoding feature.
