Kde login problem

I just reinstalled arch and I'm having a little trouble with the login. My system boots to the login screen alright but when i enter my user name and password a command prompt comes up and i have to enter startkde. The only thing i did
differently on this install was the method i used to auto-start kde, instead of adding kdm to the daemons array in /etc/rc.conf I edited the /etc/inittab file.I set inittab back to its default setting and added kdm to the daemons array and
still no change.Any help with this problem would be appreciated so i don't have to format again.
BTW.If i shut the command-line down I'm taken back to the login screen

Re: Kde login problem

it's a lil hard to me to understand what "auto-start kde method" have you used. "/etc/rc.d/kdm restart" works?

have you tried to edit your inittab like this and then reboot?

...
# Boot to console
#id:3:initdefault:
# Boot to X11
id:5:initdefault:
...
# Example lines for starting a login manager
#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >/dev/null 2>&1
