[SOLVED] Thinkpad T61: No VGA out

Using KMS (kernel mode setting) ... no xorg.conf.

xrandr doesn't even see the VGA cable as plugged in.

I see notes on /proc/acpi/ibm/video on ThinkWiki ... mine looks like:

# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/video
status:         supported
lcd:            enabled
crt:            disabled
dvi:            disabled
auto:           disabled
commands:       lcd_enable, lcd_disable
commands:       crt_enable, crt_disable
commands:       dvi_enable, dvi_disable
commands:       auto_enable, auto_disable
commands:       video_switch, expand_toggle

However, lcd, crt, and dvi changes have *no effect* when echo'ed to the file as root, even with X not running.   This despite the fact that it shows status supported, and auto toggles just fine.

Make sure your BIOS is set correctly for VGA out on and then try rebooting with the VGA cable plugged in. My Toshiba laptop won't give me VGA out if I plug the cable in when machine has already booted - I need to reboot with the cable attached first.

No dice.   Only related BIOS setting about that is boot display preference.   I tried setting that to VGA+LCD ... didn't work.   Too chicken to try just VGA, lest I be unable to see the BIOS again.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T61: No VGA out

Bingo ..... to get my bootsplash to work I had nomodeset and vga=792 in the kernel params.   Moving these enabled properly functioning VGA out again.... but now bootsplash is hosed.   But on balance I guess I'll take working VGA out.
