FreedomBox

In a month we will know if the community thinks FreedomBox is needed and whether it (the community) can put its money where its mouth is.

Re: FreedomBox

Well, it hasn't been 3 days yet and people already donated nearly $35000, so I guess community can put its money where its mouth is. To me it's a very important project and I should people who care should help anyway they can.

Re: FreedomBox

The question is, can they go all the way. If FreedomBox aims to be a fully community-funded and operated project, there are still some funding issues that need to be dealt with: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/16/nyreg … .html?_r=1

Re: FreedomBox

I guess time will tell but with the power of the community I believe it's not very far-fetched.

Re: FreedomBox

Really interesting idea, I'm not the richest, but I think this has to get a few quid of my hard earned. (edit for typos)

Re: FreedomBox

It seems this will be getting the go ahead! They have a goal of $60,000 and as I write, they have received $73,007.

$60K was a floor, not a ceiling. It is the minimum we need to start making this a real project, but it is not enough to fully fund the project. The more money we raise from the public, the more money we can raise from industry and grants. Even $1 donations help us prove the viability of our efforts.

We are right now trying to get some public attention focused on how quickly we hit $60K. So keep telling your friends about the project and the this site. We'd like to surge over the top and finish strong.

About freedombox, if you're too lazy to hit a link;

Freedom Box is the name we give to a free software system built to keep your communications free and private whether chatting with friends or protesting in the street.

Freedom Box software is particularly tailored to run in "plug servers," which are compact computers that are no larger than the power adapters for electronic appliances.

Located in people's homes or offices such inexpensive servers can provide privacy in normal life, and safe communications for people seeking to preserve their freedom in oppressive regimes.
