Hey,
Been running Arch for a little over a month with very little problem. Until a few days ago.
I decided to also install arch on my laptop, as just seeing my old xp desktop pains me deeply. On my desktop workstation with xeon processors and what not the installations went pretty much problem free, so i was expecting the same on my laptop. It worked well until Xorg.
I managed to install Xorg fine, but when i run it (using startx, not root) my screen gets completely scrambled along the diagonal. Hard to explain any other way.
"Oh well" thought i and figured some package just needed to be updated and decided to wait it out. Soon however my desktop pc got the same problem, although it doesnt manifest itself on xorg startup, but rather when i try to run emacs. The problem started when i tried to open a file that only root has write access to with emacs. I figured that out because i just tried to open a similar file in OpenOffice, and now opening OpenOffice scrambles the screen in the same way.
Normally i would spend days (now i have just spent hours) searching for a solution to this problem, but this is a really stressful week, and i would LOVE for someone to just tell me what the problem is so i can be on my way and start checking things off of my huge to do list...

No-one is going to be able to "tell you what the problem is" unless you provide some helpful diagnostics, like some logs, for example...

These are the logs for my DESKTOP computer, which has a pretty full installation with Xorg, GNOME and xf86-video-ATI drivers... Since everything worked immediately i havent edited or added any files under /etc/X11/Xorg.conf.d/... The problem seems to be growing, now opening GIMP, emacs or OpenOffice generates the same problem.
Xorg.0.log:

dmesg.log

My /var/log/lastlog only contains characters extremely weird characters... cat /var/log/lastlog only outputs strange characters, and cat /var/log/lastlog | xclip doesnt help.

Here is a photo of what the photo looks like if i open emacs, OpenOffice and GIMP. i can open gimp without problem as long as i dont load a file, as soon as i do the screen scrambles like the photo below shows. emacs and openoffice "broke" when i tried to open a read-only file (such as /etc/fstab)

This is a problem with the current ATI driver. It can be fixed by disabling color tiling or downgrading to the previous version.

Thanks a bunch! This solved my problem... Is there any reason why this bug manifests itself only when certain programs are opened? Does setting colortiling = "false" affect any other aspects of xorg?
