[SOLVED] best way to run a kernel/nvidia update

I need to update my kernel and nvidia drivers without X running. Logging into gnome, running 'pacman -Syu' and 'pacman -Sw kernel-whatever', restarting the computer in multi-user mode, running 'pacman -S kernel-whatever' and 'pacman -S nvidia', then restarting again seems a little convoluted.

Can anyone recommend a better way?

I'm not sure what you are trying to do, what's wrong with just pacman -Syu once and rebooting?

Maybe I'm making this harder than it needs to be. Should I have to reinstall the nvidia package after a kernel upgrade? I can't install nvidia with X running.

You can just issue a -Syu whenever you like (in X or console) and reboot, that's all you need to do. smile

If you only want to upgrade nvidia, it suffices to restart X.

Re: [SOLVED] best way to run a kernel/nvidia update

Thanks for the clarification. I read an old thread around here somewhere that recommended doing kernel and video driver upgrades at the console and took it a bit too far.

Sorry, maybe I'm not in the right but what about the nvidia module? It is loaded with the kernel and after updating of video driver an old one stays in RAM. So restarting of X server without reloading of nvidia module can cause some problem.
