Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

I want to do a custom install cd, a single cd, with these packages, would it fit?

xfce latest + latest thunar build
fluxbox
python 2.3 + 10 or so modules (30mb)
firefox+flash
blender 2.25 and latest
yafray latest
mplayer + mencoder + all codecs (ncluding output, divx, xvid, etc...) + frontend (haven't decided which)
real nvidia drivers
firestarter firewall
xchat
beagle + inotify enabled kernal
xmms
gift + giftui + gnutella, kazaa, ares, and edonkey plugins
audacity
sweep
gimp + gap
openoffice
inscape
aterm
artwiz fonts

Edit: Oh, forgot the xserver, xorg
Edit2: Beagle isn't really needed, I just like it. If it is too hard to do the kernel, I will drop it, I am not sure how to configure the kenrel for it in archlinux.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

are you asking for volunteers to do your legwork?

off the top of my head, the answer is a definate maybe.

if its too big, maybe make it on a DVD.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

I plan on making it, but would it fit on a cd? dvd is out of the question. I have no experiance remasterin the install cd, so I wasn't sure about size.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

without tryna sound rude, if i passed a builder who asked me to count his bricks so he could build his own house, the reply wouldn't be favourable.

dude, if you cant/wont attempt to calculate this, just try making it anyways.
Sounds like you got an interesting project for yourself.
Maybe try a very minimal one to prove the concept to yourself.
Then add extra packages.

I'd tend to think "would it all fit on a CD" would be the least of your worries.

good luck

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

nevermind, I DID try calculating it, but was unsure of the minimum size of the archlinux base and such.

Edit: and it is an interesting project, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

but I want an install cd... thanks for the link, but I checked the wiki, and arch seems to be the easiest to remaster distro I have ever seen. try doing the same thing to redhat and see how long it takes, and even try to fit it on one cd! Ha! another reason arch seems like it was a good choice.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

true, archie iso is a live cd - but u can make your own install cd (using archie-scripts) if u choose todo so - just put plain packages on the disk to be installed via pacman or whatever. though i think its a waste of space - if u gonna provide install cd with x and y packages, why not having them to use (ie, live cd), and install the all cd (packages, installation, configuration, etc) via dirsync? this is one of Archies' goals anyway...

gluck.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

yeah, doesn't archie have an install script so you can install exactly what's on the CD? so it's like a bonus... you get your install cd, but it's also a live iso

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

Use Archie I'm sure you will be able to fit what you want after all half your list are already part of Archie anyway

Currently Archie iso is running at around 250mb so it leaves pleny of room for more ;-)

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

but I love my custom live cd that is based off of slackware, has xfce and matchbox and xorg, mplayer with plugins, openoffice writer, and blender and yafray! big_smile I think I will try that though, then I can show it to my friends while secretly wiping their hd's and installing linux tongue

Edit: Does archie support booting to 2 different wm, like slax or my custom thing? I'd like to be able to choose between xfce's wm and fluxbox at boot. And I might throw matchbox on just for fun anyways, it's only a few mb, and is great for cpu intensive stuff (rendering). Also, odes it support saving to usb sticks?

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

I wrote this wiki some time ago, sounds like exactly what you want to do.
http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/Re … tall%20ISO

Oh and as far as size goes, keep it under ~650Mb and you should be fine.

thanks, I already read that. I am going for under 400mb, a medium weight install/live cd.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

just to let you know...
firestarter will pull in a considerable amount of gnome which is then used
for firestarter only, since nothing else will really need it and beagle pulls in
mono iirc

if you wanna strip down, I would start there.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

no beagle then, but what does firestarter add? I'll look for it's requirements.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

How about fwbuilder+iptables? It requires qt, but so do a lot of programs, it doesn't require kde though.

I think that will turn out to be smaller than pulling in all the gnome libs
that come in with firestarter (gnome-core, and gnomegui stuff)

I can't say so much about functionality of fwbuilder though...

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

I looked it over, and it'll do what I want it to do. I like the ui of firestarter better though, maybe I could make a gtk2 hack one day.

Re: Custom install cd. Would everything fit?

I looked at fwbuilder again ( I last looked a few months ago), and it won't do what I thought it did, is there an alternative to firestarter? I saw guraddog, but I think it needs kde. I also had an ide for a second live cd, a 210mb one with just the gimp, yafray, blender, python, and a few other things.
