ACPI issues on a Toshiba Tecra S11

Hi,

I'm quite new to ArchLinux and to Linux as well, but everything was going fine until the last kernel update (I suppose...). I'm using laptop-mode, cpufreq, acpid, but now, if I want to be able to use my ethernet card, or even succed in powering off my laptop, I need to disable acpi when loading the kernel. In that case, I loose other functionnalities (e.g. hotkeys) and on top of that I'm not sure that it's safe for the laptop (cpu temperature an so on, but I'm everything but a specialist regarding those topics).

I've been seeking during a few days for a solution (all the different options when loading the kernel, removing some acpi packages...), but so far, nothing worked.

I think that the most obvious symptom is the following : when shutting down my computer (or rebooting), it prompts the normal "system is going for halt NOW !", and then stays stuck. The only message after that is "disabling IRQ #17" (or another number when I try to change the options related to interruptions management).

If anyone has an idea, I would be gratefull, because this is already beyond the scope of my skills (which, by the way, improve every day since I started to enjoy ArchLinux ! )

Thanks.

Re: ACPI issues on a Toshiba Tecra S11

Since you're using a Toshiba laptop, I'm gonna wager that this is a DSDT problem.  The DSDTs of Toshiba laptops are almost invariably corrupted during boot, thanks to the file being compiled using Microsoft's compiler against the latest version of Windows at time of manufacture. If that's the case the only fix is to recompile the DSDT file and then compile it into a custom kernel.  I have a Toshiba laptop that doesn't properly scale the CPU levels or switch on the cooling fan--a nice little "Use Windows or throw away your laptop" message.  I haven't yet tried to build a custom kernel under Arch myself, given that the solution I've used so far--throttling down my CPU--keeps my system cool but ups the build time for a custom kernel to about three hours, and I still have to work out the PKGBUILD.  Google "toshiba laptop linux" and you'll find hundreds of testimonials complaining about incompatability; you'll also find complete refusal on the part of Toshiba to alter this in any way.  I'll never again buy a Toshiba laptop.  But I digress, and my ranting isn't helping.  Check out the wiki entry on DSDT to help get you started, as well as this Ubuntu thread and Google.  Again, note that the info in the earlier sections of the Ubuntu thread is outdated; you'll need to build a complete kernel. Sadly, this is slightly more advanced knowledge, and for the time being turning ACPI off might be the only stop-gap you have.  You may still be able to use lm_sensors to monitor core temps.  Best of luck; hope it all works out, and (on a lighter note big_smile) welcome to Arch!

Hi Anoknusa,

and thanks a lot for you reply. I already had a slight idea about toshi(t)ba policy, but now you're confirming it quite clearly. All of this is why I decided to turn to ArchLinux, and it makes me even more eager to stay away from anything like windows smile

I'll sneak into the links you gave me, almost without fear... tongue

Thanks again for your answer and welcoming message !
