Cannot Shutdown System

Hello,

For some reason, after I did a system update with pacman -Syu I can no longer shutdown the computer from the XFCE menu, only log out, shutdown and restart are grayed out.

Stranger yet, I can't just down from terminal either. Issuing a sudo shutdown now command will close programs and processes like the system is going down, only to stop at a point and want to drop me into maintenance mode (by pressing CTRL+D) or kick me back to the login screen. Even if I login with root, this still happens. I thought it wasn't because maybe I was in the power group or something:

[fox@aurora-project ~]$ groups
sys lp wheel network video audio optical floppy storage power users

but all looks well there. I'd appreciate any help.
