k10temp readings ... optimistic.

Sensors reports my CPU idle temp between 17 and 20 degrees celcius, and after running mprime for a couple of hours, it reported ~45c.  The Bios monitoring tool  reports idle temp at about 35c.

After googling and reading for a couple of hours, I'm still not sure how this offset works.  Depending on how you look at it, sensors is either reporting a difference of approximately 17 degrees, or it is reporting 1/2 of the actual temp in degrees above zero celsius.   Common sense would suggest that the former is true because 45c x 2 (90c) seems pretty high, and it probably would have shut itself down.  However, I think that it is wise to ask.

By the way, the chip is an Athlon II x 3 3.2 ghz,

Re: k10temp readings ... optimistic.

I also found k10 to read a bit low. What I did is run mprime, get a k10 temp and quickly reboot and go into BIOS and look at the BIOS reported temperature and add 1 or 2 deg to it considering the reboot time would have cooled it down somewhat. I found the difference to consistently be about 15 degC. I then add 15C to any number reported by say conky....

20 C is indeed low... do you have a liquid nitrogen cooling? smile

I would say for a phenom - class cpus (mobile or desktop) ~40 C is OK. This is the reading I am getting both under win 7 and linux.
