Changing the console resolution when using ATI Catalyst driver

Before I installed the ATI Catalyst driver, I was using the open source ati driver and the console resolution was fine at its native resolution (1280x800). However ever since I installed the proprietary driver (the open source driver was making my laptop very hot), The console resolution has become very low.

Running vbetest did not return my native resolution either - they all had the wrong aspect ratio.

I've been searching everywhere for a solution to this... Is there one?

Re: Changing the console resolution when using ATI Catalyst driver

If i understand this correctly, kernel modesetting (KMS) is needed for high resolution outside of X.
KMS is not included in the catalyst proprietary driver, so this is just the way it is.

Re: Changing the console resolution when using ATI Catalyst driver

When you are not using kms you are limited to whatever the vesabios on your card support. And most hw makers don't bother to add support for common widescreen modes. Boot with vga=ask and select the least bad mode you can find. (and just do your work in X instead of in tty)

Re: Changing the console resolution when using ATI Catalyst driver

When using fglrx (the catalyst suite), you have to set the kernel boot options to include 'nomodeset'. This makes your graphics hardware stick with the resolution set in the bios, instead of letting the kernel set it differently. This is all thanks to a few developers deciding to move the video mode setting into the kernel (KMS is Kernel Mode Setting). Nomodeset disables kms completely I believe.

The solution is to switch to the open-source driver if you want better tty resolution, or use the X environment to do your work as mentioned above (the only reason to use Catalyst is if you use X, so if you don't for some reason you should be using ati anyways).

If he was, there would be avsolutly no reason at all to have catalyst installed.

There's a fair chance that you might find your value in there.

Elendig does have a point. Any reason why the console resolution matters to you? Not to be rude or nosey, just curious.
