hello,
one year away from arch, done a minimalist fresh install
xorg-server xorg-xinit kde-workspaces and all the rest..
modified inittab, added user to kdm group
.. nothing. just black bash.
i must startx then startkde
I see in kde settings that there's no policikit dialogue to unlock permissions..
I have also a weird boot log record, indeed
could not write syslog.nf.conf: permission denied..
I don't know where to look at
help needed! thanks
alex

KDM is part of kdebase-workspace.
If you have not yet, please read through
Don't break the silence unless you can improve upon it.

Did you add kdm to DAEMONS section of your /etc/rc.conf ?
My website - http://www.LinuxDistroReview.com - reviews all the linux distros out there
Here's the Arch Linux review: http://www.linuxdistroreview.com/arch-linux

No, he said he used the inittab-method.

so I installed all kdebase, all xorg stack.. nothing
tried daemon, inittab, xinit, bash.. nothing
also added user to kdm group
I'm pretty sure the problem is with consolekit or policykit.
this would justify that boot error msg and a not working policykit to own administrative rights
so I reinstalled all these components.. nothing
I want to say that I installed arch many times in many pc successfully
and that in the forum there are a lot of people with problems like mine.
so it's a plain bug that make the system unusable.
anyway I Installed opensuse because I don't want to fight and waste time to have a working kde.
and that's a pity.
thanks

You claim this makes the system unusable, yet in your first post mention that using
startx
and
startkde
worked just fine. You also mention that you have an odd boot record, yet don't ask for any real help and don't post the log itself. You then dedicate an entire post to ranting. You say lots of other people are having this problem, yet don't provide links to any of the threads you claim to have found. It seems dubious that you ever wanted help at all. If you're having permission problems, try creating a new user a la "The Beginner's Guide." If that doesn't work, try a fresh install. Whatever you do, don't troll, since it doesn't solve anything.

I have a similar problem with GDM. Also a clean install.
I also have the syslog.conf problem.
There seems to be something weird with clean installs and dbus: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=114431
