unknown processor = kernel panel (not a linux issue really)

hello all,

ok been playing with this problem for a while with no joy,

basiclly i have an asrock board and a am2 processor in one of my box;s,
now when i boot this box its 50/50 if it shows my cpu title or amd processor: unknown model
even when it shows unknown model it picks up the right speeds and cpu count.

now, the reason its a problem,
basiclly it seems like it eather picks up the cpu title or looses it even after boot which causes a kernel panic, when i reboot bios will show the opersite than it did the last boot (eather the cpu title or unknown)

i have tryed:
updating bios
removed the mobo, from its case, attached only psu, graphics card, mem and cpu and booted
tryed a diffrent cpu
tryed diffrent mem modules

nether made any diffreance
anyone got any ideas what the problem is?

cheers,
Phil

BIOS up-to-date?

Hmmm... try booting from kernel26-lts and see if you have the problem.  If you do, it could be something in the latest kernel26 package.  Just guessing here; limited experience with AMD processors.

Re: unknown processor = kernel panel (not a linux issue really)

yea i dont think its a kernel problem, seems more of a bios problem, but will give lts a go and see if it works.

tryed blasiting it with win xp as well, same problems hence why i dont really point the finger at linux. just trying to determin if its the mobo or cpu at fault... should really look to find somone to test the cpu for me, might make phone calls tomorrow wink

cheers,
Phil
