Problem with sound output and external speakers/headphones

Since a couple months ago I've been experiencing issues with sound. Here's the problem:

- Computer boots, integrates speakers output sound. I connect external speakers or headphones, the sound output goes to the external speakers. I disconnect the external speakers, there is no sound on the integrated speakers, unless I reboot the computer. This happens most of the time.

- Computer boots, integrates speakers output sound. I connect external speakers or headphones, there is no sound on the external speakers, unless I boot with the external speakers already connected to the computer. This happens sometimes.

- Some other times, I connect the external speakers, but sound output is on the integrated speakers.

I noticed some of these a couple months ago, but I thought It might be a kernel bug. A few kernel revisions later, the problem persists,

The computer is a Gateway T-1628 with a SigmaTel STAC9205 codec (according to alsa).
